This influx of capital sets the stage for Bitcoin to challenge gold’s market cap in the decade ahead, with some analysts daring to imagine Bitcoin as the new standard for digital gold.

Ordinals: We’ve Barely Started

With the momentum of 2024 behind us and a bright horizon ahead, this is the year to tune out the noise and be fully present for what could be Bitcoin’s most transformative chapter yet.

Ordinals

After much of the year being dominated by Bitcoin Puppets and NodeMonkes battling for the top spots, we close 2024 with Quantum Cats clearly pulling ahead in the race for dominance.

Over the past 24 hours alone, nearly 10 BTC has been traded in the collection, with Puppets coming in second at a far lower but still respectable 2.346 BTC.

Have the tides turned? Interestingly, one of “The Big 4,” OMB, is absent from today’s top 10 after their recent run past 0.2 BTC. It will be fascinating to see what January holds for these collections.

Based Homies, the newest collection to mint out, enters the volume charts today in 6th place. Elsewhere, activity remains relatively steady, with familiar names like Runestone, Based Angels, and Bitcoin Frogs making their usual appearances.

TOPG, which takes the 10th spot, has been flagged as a scam collection, with its trading activity reportedly tied to wash trading.

Runes

$DOG and $BDC are the only Runes showing strength today. Even so, $DOG is merely holding steady, while $BDC has made an impressive double-digit percentage climb to reach 53 sats.

The broader picture remains unchanged—holders continue to wait patiently for the next wave of liquidity to enter the Runes market. Some speculate that the recent success of Ordinals could eventually spill over to Runes, creating renewed interest.

$KEKUS, a new mint based on Elon Musk's temporary X profile name "Kekus Maximus," slips itself into 9th place today. However, the contrast with Solana’s memecoin version—which has already reached a $25M market cap—is striking. It serves as a reminder that Runes are better suited to original memes rather than chasing trends dominated by other chains.

2024 has been a challenging year for Runes. If you minted or bought low on the top tokens, you’re still in a good position. For everyone else, it’s a waiting game—2025 holds the promise of improved UX for traders and, potentially, the influx of participants from other chains and “retail” interest.
