OpenSea Announces $SEA Token and OS2 Overhaul—Ordinals Support Absent

As reported in yesterday’s Top Posts section, OpenSea has officially unveiled its $SEA token alongside a full-scale revamp of its platform, OS2.

But now that the dust has settled, what are the key details, and how is the market reacting?

CEO Devin Finzer called it a "complete reset" for OpenSea, moving away from its more corporate, Web2 approach and rebuilding with decentralization and user-first principles in mind.

$SEA Token: What We Know So Far

Despite earlier reports suggesting $SEA eligibility would be heavily weighted toward recent trading volume, OpenSea has clarified that historical usage will play a major role. This means long-time users—not just recent high-volume traders—will have a chance to claim. Additionally, U.S. users will be eligible, contradicting speculation that they might be excluded.

While no exact launch date has been given, OpenSea has made it clear they’re prioritizing sustainability over short-term hype.

"With $SEA, the OpenSea Foundation is taking the learnings from the space and getting it right," Finzer said. "Not just recent activity or short-term plays. Rewarding OGs who believed in our space from the early days, and those who are with us for the long run."

OS2: A Complete Overhaul

OS2 is being rebuilt from the ground up, integrating both NFTs and tokens into a unified marketplace. Key features include:

  • A fully redesigned interface for an improved user experience

  • Native cross-chain purchasing

  • Support for 14 blockchains, including Flow, ApeChain, Sony’s Soneium, and Berachain

  • 0.5% marketplace fees and 0% swap fees at launch

However, one glaring omission is Bitcoin Ordinals. Given their explosion in popularity—far surpassing that of Flow and most chains on OpenSea’s list—their exclusion is a puzzling decision.

I suppose things were going too well for a moment there. OpenSea has made serious strides in getting back into people’s good books, but it wouldn’t be OpenSea without at least one fumble, would it?

A Return to Crypto-Native Roots?

Finzer acknowledged that OpenSea lost its way during the last NFT bull run, becoming too corporate and risk-averse. He says OS2 marks a shift back to a leaner, more agile, crypto-native culture, with a smaller, faster-moving team.

"Our devs in Discord fixing user issues at 3am during the holidays. A smaller, crypto-native team, merging 6x the commits with half the team size. There's that early-day energy where we're all in it together," he said.

Will This Be Enough?

OpenSea’s dominance has been eroded by competitors like Blur, which capitalized on aggressive token incentives.

The big questions: Will OS2 and $SEA be enough to win users back? And more importantly—will OpenSea eventually add support for Bitcoin Ordinals, or is this another case of missing the mark?

Ordinals

At the top of the list today—no surprise—is OMB, following the announcement that Black Eyes will mint on February 25th.

Given that this collection brings the total OMB supply to 10,000 (a traditionally favored count for NFT collections), it’s reasonable to assume this will be the final OMB release.

Meanwhile, after last night’s Taproot Wizards "funeral" in Paris, Quantum Cats have made slight gains, now sitting just under 0.24.

On the other hand, NodeMonkes and Bitcoin Puppets have dropped again, likely due to rotation into the collections making headlines.

Runes (Bitcoin Memecoins)

Yes, finally we can report that $MIM has cracked the top 10 in Rune volume! However, it's not the migrated $WZRD version—this is the airdropped token distributed to holders of Bitcoin Wizards, NodeMonkes, Bitcoin Puppets, and more.

Check the post below to see what other collections benefited, and if you held any of these, be sure to check your wallets—Nomad has left you a Valentine’s Day gift.

For the first time in as long as we can remember, $DOG is not at the top of the chart. Another shocker, but a nice one: $SAIKO has surged to 3rd place, making a forceful return with nearly $13K in volume, despite having been absent from the top spots for a while.

This shake-up has come at the expense of two usual top 5 contenders, $PUPS and $BILLY, which have now fallen to 6th and 7th.

The good news? Volume is returning. It’s still early—it’s just one day—but if this momentum holds, we could finally see a sustained period of volume over the coming weeks.

With many of the top Rune projects in discussions with platforms and the $WZRD migration reviving energy in the space, it feels like we might be very close to a major shift.
